Whether you’re an experienced yogi or you’ve never even dipped a toe into spiritual practices, chances are you’ve heard the phrase, “aligning your chakras.” It’s a concept that is widely associated with both Hindu and Buddhist practices, but what does it mean to align your chakras?
The concept is fairly easy to understand, and learning the meaning of aligning chakras can help you put it into practice to enhance personal wellness. The best way to start is to understand the context and definition of your chakras.
The Seven Chakras
Chakras are a core concept to Hindu and Buddhist tradition, coming from the Sanskrit word cakra, meaning “wheel.” Appropriately, chakra are considered to be key points in the body that energy cycles through, like a spinning wheel.
The earliest known written mention of chakras was around 1500 BCE in the Vedas, a key text in the history of yoga. However, the Vedas were passed down orally for centuries before they were put in writing, so the concept of chakras is likely many years older.
Some traditions recognize over 100 chakras in the human body, but the most popular understanding of chakras focuses on seven main points, all situated along the spine.

What Are the Seven Chakras?
The seven primary chakras all exist at key points in the body. From the base of the spine upward, they are as follows:
- Muladhara, situated at the very base of the spine.
- Svadisthhana, situated in the abdomen, a little below the navel.
- Manipura, situated in the solar plexus, just below the ribcage.
- Anahata, situated at the level of the heart.
- Vishuddha, situated at the base of the throat.
- Ajna, situated on the forehead between the eyebrows.
- Sahastrara, situated at the very top of the head.
What Does It Mean to Align Your Chakras?
We can think of chakras as spinning wheels which direct the flow of life energy through the body—kind of like cogs in a machine. Every wheel must move in harmony with the others in order to maintain a healthy and functional flow of energy.
When one of the seven chakras is out of alignment with the others, it can throw off the whole system. Aligning your chakras means rebalancing the flow of energy through the body. People achieve this through a variety of different methods, such as breathwork, postural yoga, and meditation.
Benefits of Aligned Chakras
In many traditions, chakras are believed to regulate both physical and emotional health. Though chakra alignment does not overshadow the importance of traditional medicine, it can help some people feel an improvement in their physical, psychological, and emotional health. Potential benefits of aligning your chakras include alleviating such symptoms as:
- Feelings of fear and insecurity (associated with an unbalanced muladhara chakra).
- Feelings of irritability and obsessiveness (associated with an unbalanced svadishthana chakra).
- Digestive issues (associated with an unbalanced manipura chakra).
- Depressive symptoms (associated with an unbalanced manipura chakra).
- Feelings of anxiety (associated with an unbalanced anahata chakra).
- Overwhelming feelings of shyness (associated with an unbalanced vishuddha chakra).
- Headaches and eye strain (associated with an unbalanced ajna chakra).
- Feelings of spiritual disconnection (associated with an unbalanced sahastrara chakra).
Continuing Your Spiritual Journey
The chakra system is an established part of a spiritual tradition that has guided many towards fulfillment for millennia. Understanding what your chakras are, the role they play in daily function, and what it means to align your chakras is just the beginning.
